A Day in Munich: Christmas Markets, burritos and Forever 21!

My Christmas market adventure continues in Munich where there is not one, but apparantly 22 Christmas markets in Munich, ranging from Medieval themed ones, to even a gay pink Christmas market! I was only at the one in Marienplatz, but if you’re someone who’s really into Christmas markets, Munich is definitley the city for you.

Bavarians, being the beer loving people that they are, also sell “Glühbier” along with the traditional “Glühwein” (mulled wine)…I haven’t seen them in any other state in Germany! I’ve yet to try it though, since I’m not the biggest fan of beer, but I do love Radlers, and they’re definitely the best in Bavaria!

If you’re planning on going to a Christmas market in a big city like Munich, especially Marienplatz since it’s right in the city centre, then you either have to plan to go really early, or be faced with huge crowds. Like crazy crowds of people, making it really hard to move around anywhere, and long line ups for everything. Weekends are definitely the busiest as you have lots of people from nearby villages and towns go up to visit (kind of like me I guess!).

It reminds me a lot of Christmas time in Chicago, where on the weekends, every family from Illinois is in Chicago taking pictures of the Macy’s Christmas store front display.

While the Marienplatz Christmas market consists of booths lined up along the street, which is different from most Christmas markets since they tend to cluster together to give you a feel of a cute Christmas village, I do love this one because I feel like it has a cosmopolitan air to it.

And of course, Munich is one of my favourite German cities, and I’m really excited to be moving here for 2 months starting in Feb!

And lastly, my favourite thing about Christmas in Germany is the fact that you can freely say “Merry Christmas” (“Frohe Weihnachten”) instead of “Happy Holidays” or worse, “Happy Non-Denominational Holidays” without the fear of being politically incorrect.

Germany: +1

A Forever 21 also recently opened in Munich and it’s the most amazing Forever 21 I’ve ever seen! It’s as impressive as the Topshop on Oxford Street in London! It has I think 5 floors (I stopped counting after the first few), with rows and rows of lovely sweaters and dresses. With leggings for 3 euros and sweaters at 21 euros, I think it’s even cheaper than the ones in Canada!

Aside my hunt for the perfect Christmas market mug, I’ve always been wanting to find a good Mexican place in Germany. Yea sure there’s lot of “Mexican” restaurants in Germany, but if you’ve ever tried a burrito at any of those places, you know it’s definitely not Mexican food.

There’s a Chipotle that recently opened in Frankfurt, but from the reviews, it seems expensive and not as great as the ones in North America. In Munich, there’s a place called Pure Burrito which is suppose to be a Chipotle knock off, so I decided to give it a shot…

…and I have to say it’s definitely just as good as Chipotle! Well the only “complaint” I have is that the rice doesn’t have the same rich cilantro taste as in Chipotle, but nonetheless, I’d say I’ll probably be visiting this place quite a lot when I’m living in Munich in the new year….

The bf….half eating, half making love to his burrito

Before going back to Regensburg, me and the bf also stopped by the BMW Museum (BMW Welt), which I would recommend if you’re stopping by in Munich. I don’t have much interest in cars, especially considering:

1. I have a driver’s license but I haven’t driven in more than 2 years
2. If you ask me what my dream car is, I would answer with something like “uhhh a blue one?”
3. I’m one of the few people who actually enjoys just walking and taking public transit (except during rush hour)

After a visit to the BMW Welt, I also learned that my dream car will also have a tan leather interior. Soooo sexy (unless I end up accomplishing my dream of living in a hot weather country).

…and that I also want a motorcycle.

22 Christmas markets in Munich, total awesomeness! Also, I was in Munich in September when they were still building Forever21, can’t wait to visit it. I think there’s only 2 forever21 in Germany, the other one is in Berlin.

Yea I was in Munich a couple months ago and saw that they were building a new Forever 21…luckily I live nearby, so I made sure to visit when they opened it! 😛 And I’ll have to check out the one in Berlin when I visit in Feb!

Oh my gosh, Michelle, this was so awesome! Seeing Germany at Christmas time is a huge bucket list wish for me.The Marienplatz Christmas market sounds terrific and I’m not into crowds so great advice on getting there early. I like that it’s ok to say “Merry Christmas”! The burrito has my mouth watering and that was hysterically funny on your bf getting intimate with his lol. I laughed out loud on your car remark, “…the blue one…” and fun to go to the BMW museum! Great post again and keep them coming please! 🙂

Thanks Mike! 😀 You definitely must go! The one in Munich is wonderful…and you must check out the one in Nürnburg too! They were the first to have Christmas markets in Germany so it’s very historical….it was already crowded when I went in the early afternoon on a Monday! (And everyone there seemed to be American haha)

You have just made me wanna pack my bags and leave for Germany. That’s an absolutely awesome place and I can just imagine how tasty the local delicacies were. I visited Berlin Christmas market last year and the German mulled wine rocked!

I’ve yet to visit the one in Berlin, but I’d love to see it sometime! 😀 Maybe next Christmas!
