One of the best things about living in a big city is all the food you can try…and there’s definitely no shortage of amazing restaurants in Munich! Continuing with my Munich themed posts, this one is all about food!
So if you’re in Munich for a few days, or if you’re living here and are looking for some new places to check out, here’s my list of my absolute favourite places to eat here! (give me a month or so, and there will probably be a part 2 of this list!).
ASIAN
Zum Koreaner
Amalienstraße 51
I loved this little Korean restaurant so much the first time I found it, that I’ve taken all my friends who’ve come to Munich here. It’s definitely a no frills kind of place where you line up, order and pay for your dish by the entrance, and sit down while one of the restaurant workers calls out your dish in a confusing Korean-German accent, causing you and a few others to look at the dish in confusion, wondering who exactly it’s for. There’s only about 7 dishes they offer so the chances of you ordering the same thing as the people before and after you are very likely…especially if it’s the Schweinebauch house-specialty. Then again, for the price of 5-6 euros per dish, it definitely makes for an interesting experience (and the best Korean food I’ve ever had!)
Pho Ha Noi
Humboldstraße 5
For some reason, there’s endless amounts of Veitnamese restaurants in Munich (they’re much harder to find in smaller cities in Germany). They range from cheap bistro style ones to expensive looking Asian fusion restaurant and bar style ones where inside, everyone is wearing suits and dresses. Pho Ha Noi is one of the more fancier, expensive Vietnamese restaurants (we actually found it by accident while looking for one of the cheaper pho places), but if you’re looking for good pho in Munich, this is definitely a great place to check out. They have very generous portions, and tastes authentic!
Hong Kong City
Helene-Meyer-Ring 11
On the quest for some good Chinese dim sum, we found this restaurant, located near the Olympic stadium. When we first went, we were surprised to see the restaurant full of Chinese people (which is always a good sign when you go to a Chinese restaurant in a Western country). I hardly ever see Chinese people in Germany (other than those part of a tour group), so this place is like a hidden gem for Chinese food (the restaurant was pretty confusing to find, so it’s definitely hidden all right).
German Chinese food tends to be very mediocre, but the dishes here tastes exactly like the Chinese restaurants you find in the Chinatown in Toronto, which is delicious, and probably as authentic as you can get Chinese food for, outside Asia. The duck and seafood dishes are SOOO amazing (they don’t skimp on the seafood either), and as a bonus, they have a big selection of bubble tea!
(Interesting fact: I’ve only had bubble tea about 5 times in my life, and 4 of those times happen to be in Germany)
Willy-Brandt-Platz 5
There’s tons of German/Bavarian style restaurants all around the city, but most of them tend to be pretty touristy and pricey. The bf discovered this place since his work would have dinner parties here often, so when Miriam was here, he suggested we go here for dinner one day. The prices are reasonable and the schnitzel I had was great!
Lindwurmstraße 57
I love Mexican food and back home I’m a sucker for Chipotle. Unfortunately, if you’ve ever been to a Mexican restaurant in Europe, you’d realize how little resemblance it has to the amazing Mexican food we would get in North America. Chipotle has been opening up chains in Europe, but there’s only one in Germany and that’s in Frankfurt, which according to some friends, it’s expensive and not that great. Luckily in Munich, all these burrito joints have been popping up (all with some sort of hipster vibe), and while they’re not identical to Chipotle, some could really give Chipotle a run for their money!
My favourite is Pure Burrito, and judging by how much English speakers you hear in that place, I think plenty of expats think so too! It’s also reasonably priced at 6 euros for a large burrito.
Burrito Company
Augustenstraße 74
The interior and visuals of this place is much nicer than Pure Burrito, but when it comes down to the food, I still have to say Pure Burrito is much better. However, Burrito Company is pretty good as well, with their San Francisco style mission burritos. Their prices are similar to Pure Burrito and the service is better.
Nymphenburger Straße 69
Goetheplatz 2
Hans im Glück is a really popular burger restaurant chain in Germany. Similar to burrito joints, burger restaurants with a hipster vibe seem to be all over Munich. While burger joints back home are greasy, messy (but also very yummy!), burger restaurants in Munich tend to be more trendy and expensive. The burgers here cost around 7-9 euros (without any sides), but they sure are tasty. This place is also great for vegetarians since they have an impressive selection of about 10 veggie burgers to choose from. Fries are around 3-4 euros (the one pound fries are amazing!) and while they have an impressive cocktail selection, they’re pretty pricey at 8 euros each (although apparently, that’s just how much cocktails costs in Munich!)
They also have one of the coolest interior designs I’ve seen at a restaurant with their forested theme. If you’re in Germany, definitely check them out!
Burger House
Ismaningerstraße 5
Rablstraße 37
This place is so popular that you normally have to reserve up to a week in advance just to get a table! They have two locations in Munich and they offer online reservations on their website. Their burgers are amazing and thick, although a bit small. They have an American diner vibe with black and white photos of movie stars, and even milk shakes in tin cups! (which are really good but could definitley be a lot larger!).
CAFES/DESERTS
Frogis
Karlsplatz 1/Stachus Passagen
Frozen yogurt is another American specialty that’s starting to become more popular in Germany. I love this place because you pay for the size of your cup, and fill it with as much frozen yoghurt and toppings as you’d like…as long as it fits into the cup (you can see from our cups in the photo that we kind of over did it!)
Black Bean
Münchner Freiheit 12
Amalienstraße 44
Despite the fact that it’s a bit lame to go to Starbucks when you’re in Europe, I LOVE chai lattes, and I’ve never had one better than the ones from Starbucks. While Black Bean chai lattes isn’t as perfect as the Starbucks one, it’s definitely the best European style chai latte I’ve had (which is a relief because they don’t have any Starbucks in Regensburg), and it even comes in a few different flavours like green tea and vanilla. They even have iced chai lattes that are just as good!
It’s also one of the few cafes I’ve found in Germany that seems to have free, reliable wifi for people like me who love to work in cafes!
