Dubrovnik, the Pearl of the Adriatic

IMG_4948

No trip to Croatia is complete without checking out Dubrovnik. I didn’t know much about the city until I started researching where to go on my mini Croatia trip, but every source I encountered raved about Dubrovnik. Just from it’s descriptions of it’s beautiful ancient walled city to it’s sparkling blue Adriatic coastline, I knew that’s where I wanted to go. It definitely earned its pearl of the Adriatic nickname!

I’ve never watched Game of Thrones but the show is shot in Dubrovnik which no doubt adds to its tourism. Somehow between end of the semester exams and assignments (which in Canada ends in April rather than July) I totally forgot that we’d be going to Croatia in the middle of July – during the height of the heat and of tourist season! So I was definitely surprised how the city was just packed with tourists.

Nonetheless, as I walked around the old city and soaked up the sun on the beach, I can definitely see why its become such a popular vacation spot.

Now go to some more photos of this gorgeous city! (along with some fun facts about Dubrovnik and Croatia!)

Croatians have some interesting name choices for their currency. The Croatian currency is called the kuna, which is named after a rodent! Their coins are called lipa, which are named after lime trees!

The necktie was invented in Croatia, which in Croatian is called the “cravat.” By the way speaking of ties, did you know there’s a thing called World Tie Day?

Agatha Christie spent her honeymoon in Dubrovnik! If it’s good enough for her, it’s good enough for us!

Croatia enjoys 2,715 hours of sunshine a year. That’s more than Sydney, Australia! Ahhhh take me back!!

Irish writer George Bernard Shaw once said that “Those who seek paradise on Earth should come and see Dubrovnik.” What do you guys think? Have you been to Dubrovnik?

Maybe this photo of the view from a cliff bar will convince you guys otherwise 😉
