Top 5 best cheap eats in Berlin

One thing I love about Berlin is that although it’s such a big city, everything is so amazingly cheap. While Munich is classy, elegant and rich, Berlin is hip, artsy and experimental. Some of my friends call Berlin a “giant art experiment” and when you walk around neighbourhoods such as Kreuzberg, it would be difficult not to notice it’s alternative edge, hipster vibe and of course, the abundance of cheap eats!

There are some amazing restaurants all throughout Berlin. And just because prices are cheap, doesn’t mean the quality isn’t there. In fact, some of the best food I’ve had have been in Berlin, and none of these meals have cost more than 5 euros.

Crazy right? Well crazy is what Berlin is all about!

Check out my top 5 cheap eats below!

Currywurst

Currywurst is a specialty in Berlin and luckily for everyone, it’s pretty easy to find a currywurst stand anywhere in Berlin. You can get a serving of currywurst alone, or with fries or bread on the side. In fact, it’s so popular, that there’s even a currywurst museum in Berlin, and a book and movie (based on the book) made about currywurst! Berliners obviously have a love affair with this saucy sausage dish.

Some of the most popular currywurst places include Curry 36, Konnopke’s Imbiss and Witty’s. The best part is that a currywurst dish only costs around 3-3.50 euros!

Wok Show
Greifenhagenerstr. 31

This place has the most amazing, to die for dumplings. They’re made fresh and you can order them steamed or fried. The best part is that 20 dumplings (easily a very filling meal) only cost 5 euros, and 40 dumplings cost just 10 euros!

Burgermeister
Oberbaumstraße 8

What’s easily one of the best burger joints in Germany is actually located in a stall that used to be a public washroom. It sounds kind of gross and yet, there’s always a huge lineup there, at any given time. There’s no actual seats either, but rather milk crates that subsitute for chairs.

In Munich, where the best burger places costs around 6-7 euros per burger, at Burgermeister, burgers start at a low 3.80 euros!

Hamy Cafe
Hasenheide 10

Hamy Cafe has easily the best pho I’ve had in Germany…and the cheapest! They have generous portions and all their dishes like pho and curry chicken only costs 4,90 euros!

While it’s in Kreuzberg, it’s a bit far out from the city centre, but well worth it for a super delicious meal! The place is usually crowded too, so you might have to wait a bit for a table…or reserved beforehand!

Dolores
Rosa-Luxemburg-str. 7

It’s right across from the KaDeWe, so if you can’t afford any of the gourmet food in the KaDeWe, there’s nothing better than a good burrito from Dolores right across the street! Burritos start at 4.50 euros, and it’s definitely the best burrito joint in Germany!

Have you been to Berlin? What are some of your favourite places to eat there?
